Early on the morning of Saturday, 7 March 2009, eight Aucklanders and one Wellingtonian converge on a Freemans Bay apartment to compete in day one of the second History of Magic draft. Gathered in the room are several notable players from the New Zealand Magic scene, including two-time national champ Mark Simpson (piloting the deck drafted by the absent Koray Turker) and Gameplayer founder and co-owner James White (himself a member of the national team on four occasions).
The draft itself was carried out online using a drag and drop interface designed specifically for the purpose, and took approximately a month from start to finish. At the completion of each round players were able to see what others had drafted, meaning that — in theory at least — everyone is prepared for what they'll face today.
